Creating Space for Ourselves: A Journey into Mindfulness

Creating Space for Ourselves: A Journey into MindfulnessA Design Worth EmbracingThe Power of RitualsA Morning Meditation PracticeThe Gift of AffirmationsCandles & JournalsThe Invitation Remains Open

Every day, we are gifted with 24 hours—a simple truth that can feel paradoxically burdensome. Often, it seems as if we’re racing against time, scavenging mere minutes to check emails or whip up dinner. The conventional wisdom tells us to make time for ourselves; yet, it rarely explains how to carve out this precious space amid life’s chaos.

I’ve often pondered the intricacies of this dilemma. How do we prioritize self-care in a world that constantly demands our attention? When Alicia Keys spoke at the Making Space: Wellness Day event in Brooklyn on October 21, 2025, she offered a candid insight into her own quest for balance—one that resonated deeply with me and many others present.

“Creating time, taking time, making space.”

Sitting there among a crowd eager for wisdom, I was struck by Keys’ transformation from someone who struggled to find personal time to an advocate for intentional living. “It’s a woman thing,” she remarked thoughtfully. Women often find themselves in nurturing roles—giving endlessly but seldom receiving in return. I could relate; so many times I have felt my own needs fade into the background.

Keys shared a defining moment from her past when she was just 13 years old. She recalled overhearing her grandmother declare “I’m done” after enduring grief from the loss of her husband. In that profound moment of realization, Keys recognized that waiting until we are alone or older to pursue our dreams is not an option. The urgency of making space was palpable as she described how that lesson lingered with her over the years.

I found myself reflecting on my own life experiences—the moments where fear held me back from pursuing what I truly wanted. It made me question: why do we wait? Why do we feel guilt when considering our own needs?

A Design Worth Embracing

With encouragement from friends and driven by self-reflection, Keys began designing her life intentionally—a process she urged us all to undertake at the event. “What does your ideal week look like?” she asked pointedly. “Maybe Friday is your day free from calls and meetings,” she suggested warmly.

This idea ignited something within me; perhaps it is indeed possible to craft our days with intention rather than letting them slip by mindlessly as though they were simply chores on a never-ending list. What if I chose peace on Fridays? What if I dedicated even small pockets of time each week solely for myself?

Set against the backdrop of New York’s vibrant energy, Keys’ words hung in the air: it’s about claiming those moments and recognizing our inherent right to them without guilt or hesitation.

The Power of Rituals

As someone who has grappled with balancing myriad responsibilities while maintaining mental clarity and emotional health, I understood intimately what Keys meant when she described rediscovering herself after becoming a mother again.

At one point during her journey post-baby Genesis’ birth, she faced resistance toward taking just four days away for a meditation retreat; leaving behind two children felt insurmountable—an impossible task shrouded in doubt and worry about their wellbeing.

I couldn’t help but wonder: how often do we convince ourselves that putting ourselves first equates to neglecting those we love? It lingers with me still—the irony that caring well for ourselves can serve us better as caregivers.

A Morning Meditation Practice

Diving deep into meditation at this retreat became transformative—not just for Alicia but also inspiring hope within those who heard her story unfold before them like petals opening towards sunlight. Now each morning at dawn around 5:30 AM—a sacred hour infused with silence—she engages in rituals crafted gently over years spent exploring mindfulness practices.

The way she explained meditating struck me profoundly; some sessions may span three minutes while others extend up to twenty minutes—but all contain essential elements of consistency: breath control along with setting intentions aligned towards growth or grace resonates beautifully across varying spans of existence amidst busy lives filled daily obligations!

“We can fill our souls… replenished.”

The Gift of Affirmations

Alicia builds upon these quiet moments through affirmations tailored uniquely towards navigating challenges encountered throughout each day—from feeling anxious regarding work projects needing attention or simply asking universe beseeching patience—to illuminating pathways toward strength amidst turbulent times—all remarkably encapsulated within mere eleven-minute intervals!

This simplicity made sense—a reminder echoing back through spaces where anxiety had once thrived ferociously before dissipating softly like fog lifting off mountains early morning light breaks forth illuminating paths untaken previously unnoticed… At times too overwhelmed handling external noise swirling incessantly round thoughts trapped inside cluttered minds struggling hold firm focus amid chaos surrounding daily affairs—it becomes vital nurture delicate threads connecting heart&mind working harmoniously together achieving clarity needed navigate complex terrain ahead smoothly!
