Rediscovering Mobility: My Journey Back to CorePower Yoga
For the past seven and a half years, I’ve been on a fitness journey that continually evolves, with three and a half of those years spent as a fitness coach. I always knew how to push myself physically; however, recovery was never my strong suit. Four hours of sleep? No problem. Sometimes I would power through without going to bed at all, fueled by one coffee and two energy drinks in hand. And stretching? I often thought it was unnecessary since I considered myself naturally flexible.
But over time, I’ve come to realize that flexibility and mobility are not the same. Flexibility is about passive range—how far you can stretch a joint without resistance—while mobility reflects active movement control through that range. Although I’ve never had an issue with flexibility, after years of intense workouts lacking recovery work, I’ve discovered imbalances in my mobility and muscle tension throughout my body. This realization drove me to dedicate two weeks to yoga-based training at CorePower.
These days, my workout routine includes strength training three times a week alongside athletic conditioning workouts aimed at enhancing cardiovascular endurance and power output. I’m also squeezing in some Solidcore classes when time allows while preparing for Hyrox—a functional fitness competition around the corner. With race day nearing, incorporating yoga’s mind-muscle connection alongside recovery benefits felt essential.
The Many Benefits of Yoga
Yoga isn’t just about improving flexibility; it enhances balance, promotes mobility, reduces stress and anxiety—all things we could use more of in our busy lives. What many don’t realize is that yoga also cultivates connection and increases awareness of your body.
I started reading about yoga’s advantages—better blood flow, fascial release, mental clarity—and felt like maybe this was the solution I needed for my physical struggles. So I committed two weeks to various classes at CorePower and want to share my experience honestly.
Diving into CorePower’s Offerings
You don’t need to be an experienced yogi or even a fitness fanatics to enjoy what CorePower has to offer. It’s truly a welcoming space for anyone from beginners establishing their relationship with movement to seasoned gym-goers looking for something fresh.
Founded in 2002 by Trevor Tice, CorePower has expanded across the country offering six distinct class types categorized into three main areas:
Flow and Cardio Conditioning
- CorePower 1: Low Intensity & Low Heat – This class introduces you to Vinyasa yoga’s fundamental principles and postures.
- CorePower 2: Medium Intensity & High Heat – This provides a more challenging flow through Vinyasa postures while building strength.
Functional Strength Training
- Yoga Sculpt: High Intensity & Medium Heat – An intense blend of yoga combined with cardio core work using weights.
- CorePower Strength X: High Intensity & Low Heat – A HIIT-inspired strength-building workout that incorporates energizing breathwork.
Mobility and Active Recovery
- Hot Power Fusion: Medium Intensity & High Heat – A sequence combining traditional hot yoga with Vinyasa moves.
- Core Restore: Low Intensity & Low Heat – Focused on stretching and breathing techniques for recovery.
A Return After Six Years Away from CorePower
I have been away from CorePower practice for about six years now; however, my first encounter with this studio took place back in 2019 when I relocated to San Francisco due to job commitments close by. The facilities immediately appealed to me then; hence revisiting them excited me further as opportunity knocked again.
This time around in New York City began with Yoga Sculpt at Midtown East location—it had genuinely been so long since I’d set foot through those doors! Arriving sans mat or towel (just water bottle), renting one was convenient for $4—invaluable given city life’s packed schedule where carrying gear everywhere isn’t always practical!
The classroom itself felt intimate but wasn’t overcrowded—there were roughly nineteen others sharing the space allowing everyone room enough for maneuverability during exercises laid out ahead!
I expected meditative music echoing gentle nature sounds but instead found an upbeat selection ranging from 60 BPM up through 150 BPM tailored directly towards exercise intensity levels—even featuring tracks perfect for car karaoke sessions!
Pushing Through My Comfort Zone
The workout itself challenged me significantly! We utilized small-to-medium weights paired along bodyweight exercises—it involved plenty of pulses (which has always been my favorite). With room temperatures hovering around ninety degrees Fahrenheit resulted in sweat pouring down every single pore! Initially uncomfortable adjusting within such high warmth conditions certainly added intensity! Thankfully though our instructor encouraged breaks whenever needed—which proved helpful as sweat turned slippery underfoot!
“Empathy was consistently present throughout each class; options existed allowing modifications amplifying according individual ability.”
A Refreshing Change From Typical Gyms
Taking various classes including core-focused Yoga Sculpt sessions enhanced appreciation greatly—they forced adaptation toward embracing discomfort leading eventually toward enjoyment derived from pushing limits even further beyond comfort zones previously established within typical gym environments where air conditioning reigns supreme!
Certainly caught off guard initially regarding heat making jumping jacks less appealing than before yet gradually grew accustomed satisfying newfound levels excitement gained tackling challenges head-on rather than shying away!
A Special Connection Through Movement
Earning quick favoritism towards ‘Core Power Two,’ its emphasis connecting mind-body struck chords resonating deeply considering how often neglect stretches amid rigorous training regimens! Class atmosphere fostered reflective focus upon connections made while flowing between movements yielded profound sense ease despite tightness previously experienced working those areas neglected entirely until now revealed gaps needing light filled beams stretching practices.”
“If there is any advice worth sharing here: bring along towel—that little layer makes all difference during sweaty flows!”
